Loren Guttman was born and raised in New York City. In 2003 she left home for St. Louis to attend Washington University, where she double majored in psychology and Spanish, and minored in political science. There, she participated actively in student life as president of Alpha Epsilon Phi, and gained a social consciousness that guided her post-graduate endeavors. In 2007 Loren joined Teach For America where she worked as a middle school special education teacher in the south Bronx, while earning a Masters in Teaching at Pace University. Loren’s experience in the classroom solidified her commitment to educational equity. She is currently in her fourth year of teaching and so proud of her seventh and eighth grader’s success in reading, writing, and American history. In 2010 Loren began a reduced residency Masters in Social Work at Columbia University. Through her studies there she hopes to gain clinical expertise and insight into public policy to enact education reform that will make it possible for all children to access a good education.
